Ensure Pure Water While Outdoors with SteriPen Water Purification
Clean drinking water is one of the most important things to remember when planning camping or hiking trips. Your water purification tools should never be where you cut weight when preparing your gear to go out for a few days or a few weeks. It’s important to always pack 2 water purification systems – one as a main and one as a back-up – to ensure that you always have access to clean drinking water.
Captain Dann’s of Smokey Mountain Trader offers highly-efficient and cost-effective SteriPen water purification systems. The SteriPen systems, the Adventurer Opti and the Traveler are small and lightweight yet highly efficient water purification systems for any outdoor activity.
Keep a SteriPen for Back-Up Water Purification While Camping & Hiking
Water purification pumps fail and filters get clogged, so it’s important to have a back-up water purification system when you’re out in the wilderness, whether for camping or hiking. We’ve used a Catadyne Hiker Pro and Sawyer mini water purifier only to have these systems break after purifying a couple liters of water. Though they are a great value, using the SteriPen water purification system ensures that you’ll have access to clean water should your initial water purification system fail.
The SteriPen water purification systems are powered by two CR123 batteries, and purify up to 8000 liters of water on one set of batteries. Using an optical ultra-violet light, the SteriPen kills all bacteria and viruses quickly when submerged into water, though it’s important to remember that the SteriPen doesn’t remove sediment from water. It’s best to pre-filter your water with a T-shirt, water filter or something handy to capture any sediment before using the SteriPen.
Don’t cut weight with your water purification systems, and always remember to keep back-up batteries for your SteriPen Adventurer Opti or Traveler – keeping a back-up for your back-up – to ensure you’ve always got access to clean water. You can’t expect to pack all of the water you’ll need, since 1 gallon of water is about 8.25lbs: ‘A pint’s a pound the world around.’

Do you know how much water you need to drink to stay hydrated when exploring the outdoors? On average, the typical male body requires three liters of water per day, but when you’re hiking or camping outdoors, you’ll need close to double that amount to ensure your body stays hydrated, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. If you’re unsure of how much water your body needs while hiking or camping, check out this neat Hydration Calculator from Camelbak.
